Ankle braces For Football - Prevent Ankle Sprains

There are numerous studies that state if a previous ankle sprain is not cared for correctly 9 times out of 10 the same ankle will become reinjured. Ankles that have had previous injuries can be unstable and are always open to being re-sprained again and again. It is important that football players with these types of injuries wear ankle braces for football to help the ankle to stay in alignment during vigorous exercise. The braces help the body to keep the ankle in the right positions, doing something that a injured ankle may not be able to do. Some doctors or researchers speculate that when ankle injuries occur the nerves that tell your body what position your ankle is in are damaged. The proprioceptors (nerves in the ankles) have the ability to tell the body when the ankle has gone too far in the inappropriate direction. Thereby, telling the body to correct the position of the ankle immediately. It is more difficult for the body to know when inappropriate movement is occurring when these nerves have been damaged.
Here is a way to know that you may have proprioceptor damage.
One of the ways to know that you may have propioceptors damage is Lack of balance. An easy test that your doctor can do is to administer a balance test. Your doctor will ask you to stand on one leg and count to 15. If during your 15 seconds you have to put your leg down because you cant keep balance then you may have the nerve damage.
Playing on quality surfaces conditions can lower your risk factor in having another ankle sprain. Football players know that artificial turf can cause problems with ankle sprains, the tension between the players shoes and the surface increases friction. High friction will hold the players foot in contact in a stationary position while the upper body is still moving. This is a prime way to get a sprain. As I spoke before, those football players that have had previous sprain would want to wear ankle braces for football.
